DEX Maintenance and Aftercare

Proper care and maintenance of Deckorators decking and stair treads will help preserve their appearance and longevity. Here are essential guidelines to follow:

Color Variation
  • Color Variability: Like most composite materials, Deckorators stair treads may show color variation due to the natural differences in wood fibers and polymers used in the manufacturing process.
  • Recommendation: To achieve a consistent appearance, it is advised to purchase all required materials at once, as different manufacturing runs may produce slightly different shades.
  • Note: If color variation is not acceptable, do not install the product.
Preventing Mold and Mildew Growth
  • Mold and Mildew Formation: These fungi can grow on any exterior surface, including decking materials like wood, plastic, concrete, and metal, especially in consistently wet or shaded areas.
  • Cause: Mold and mildew are natural occurrences and can appear due to environmental conditions. Spores from the environment are commonly carried by the wind and may land on deck surfaces.
Cleaning to Prevent Mold/Mildew:
  • Regular Cleaning: Wash your decking periodically with soap or mild detergent mixed with water to remove dirt, debris, and spores, preventing mold or mildew buildup.
  • Pressure Washing: Do not use high-pressure washers to remove mold/mildew. A pressure washer with a fan-tipped nozzle can be used lightly to rinse or wet the surface, but abrasive water streams can push spores deeper into the material, making the problem worse.
  • Deck Wash Products: Several deck wash and cleaning products are available for exterior surfaces. Use products that are specifically designed for composite or wood decking. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions, and test any cleaner in a small, inconspicuous area first.
Mold Inhibitors:
  • Preventive Maintenance: Use mold inhibitors to prevent long-term mold and mildew growth. These products can be found in most home improvement stores or online.
  • Read Instructions: Ensure you read and follow all instructions for any mold-inhibitor product you choose. Some may be more effective based on your decking's environmental exposure.
Safety Precautions:
  • Handling Deckorators: Like with any building material, use common-sense precautions when handling Deckorators. Wear dust masks and eye protection to avoid irritation from sawdust.
  • Gloves: Protect your hands by wearing gloves during construction or cleaning work.
  • Post-Work Hygiene: Always wash your hands after handling materials to avoid irritation or contamination.
By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your Deckorators decking maintains its beauty and durability while preventing mold and mildew growth over time.
