Installing Suelo WPC Decking

Proper preparation and installation are crucial for achieving a durable, aesthetically pleasing, and long-lasting decking project. Below is a detailed guide to installing Suelo WPC decking.

Before You Start
  • Acclimatization: Allow the decking boards to acclimatize for 3 days, raised 100 mm off the ground while ensuring they are flat and dry.
  • Stable Conditions: Installation should occur on a stable, flat surface to prevent deformation of the decking.
Preparing the Area
Substrate Requirements:
  • Install on a solid surface, such as concrete. Grass, uneven paving slabs, or sand will cause movement and damage the decking.
  • A drainage channel in the foundation is recommended to ensure free water flow every 600–800 mm.
Joists/Keels:
  • Composite keels should not be directly fixed to foundations.
  • Keel/joist centres should be spaced no more than 300 mm apart. For diagonal board installation or elevated decking, reduce spacing to 250 mm.
  • Double joists are recommended under butt joints for proper support.
Ventilation and Elevation:
  • Ensure proper ventilation. The decking should not be enclosed on all four sides. Leave 70 mm clearance beneath the deck to allow airflow and prevent moisture buildup.
  • Deck boards must be raised 50 mm off the ground, while composite keels require a minimum elevation of 25 mm.
Consultation:
  • For elevated installations or structural considerations, consult a qualified engineer.
Installation Steps
Drainage Slope:
  • Provide a slope of 0.5% (5 mm per metre) along the board's length for water runoff.
Spacing and Fixing:
  • Maintain a 6 mm gap between deck boards to allow for expansion.
  • Use electrophoretic-coated Grab Deck Clips and stainless-steel screws. Install at 300 mm centres, requiring at least 12 clips per 3.6 m board.
  • For the first and last boards, use stainless steel Starter Clips at the same spacing.
Butt Joints:
  • Place double keels under butt joints, securing each side with Grab Deck Clips. Leave an 8 mm gap between boards for expansion and drainage.
  • When boards meet walls or fixed objects, leave a 10 mm gap.
Support:
  • Deck boards must be supported along their entire length. Do not allow overhangs exceeding 10 mm.
  • Composite keels must be supported at maximum 400 mm centres for regular installation, or 250 mm centres for Suelo decks.
Pedestals:
  • Use pedestals for additional support:
  • Every 400 mm along 61 mm x 41 mm composite keels (10 pedestals per 3.6 m board).
  • Every 450 mm for 60 mm x 40 mm treated timber joists (8 pedestals per 3.6 m board).
  • Pedestals should adjust from 35 mm to 60 mm to ensure proper leveling.
Rails and Posts:
  • Fix rails and posts directly through the deck to the substructure. Allow 10 mm for expansion to accommodate seasonal movement.
Keel End Joints:
  • Leave a 20 mm gap when butt jointing composite keels.
Additional Tips
  • Non-Structural Keels: Composite keels are non-structural and should only be installed on solid surfaces.
  • Seasonal Movement: Plan for material expansion and contraction by maintaining proper gaps.
  • Surface Drainage: Ensure a drainage slope to avoid water pooling and maintain durability.
Following these guidelines will ensure a smooth, professional installation of your Suelo WPC decking, offering long-lasting beauty and performance.
