Cover Boards or Replacement Fascia?

When it comes to choosing between cover boards and replacement fascias for your PVC roofing needs, understanding the key differences can help you make an informed decision. Available in a variety of colors and styles, from classic White to elegant Black Ash Woodgrain, both options serve distinct purposes and have specific installation requirements. Below, we outline the essential differences between cover boards and replacement fascias, along with important considerations for your purchase.
Size and Color Options
Both cover boards and replacement fascias are offered in a diverse range of sizes and colors.
  • Cover Boards: Typically available in depths ranging from 100mm to 605mm.
  • Replacement Fascias: Offered in depths from 150mm to 405mm.
Both types of boards can be found in various colors, ensuring a match for any aesthetic.
  • Swish Cover Boards: These are 9mm thick.
  • Swish Replacement Fascias: These are thicker at 16mm.
Load Bearing Capabilities
The primary distinction between cover boards and replacement fascias lies in their load-bearing capacities:
  • Cover Boards: Although fascia boards inherently support guttering, cover boards are not load-bearing on their own. They must be installed over a backing board, which is usually the original timber fascia. Before installation, ensure that this backing board is free from rot and strong enough to support both the cover board and guttering. In new build situations, contractors often use a new timber backing board (typically 1" thick sawn timber) for support.
  • Replacement Fascia Boards: These are thicker and designed to be load-bearing independently. They can be fixed directly to the rafter ends, allowing guttering to be attached anywhere along their edge. This makes replacement fascias an ideal choice for new builds or refurbishment situations where existing timber fascias cannot support additional weight.
Design Variations
  • Cover Boards: Always designed with an L-shaped profile, cover boards feature a rounded angle on the return leg that softens their appearance. They are also available in an Ogee design with a decorative groove along the front edge.
  • Replacement Fascia Boards: Offer a broader range of profile choices. In addition to the standard appearance, Bull Nose and Ogee options provide alternatives for those seeking a unique look.
Cost Considerations
Cover boards generally cost 30% to 40% less than replacement fascias. However, it is essential to factor in the additional costs associated with backing boards and any extra labor required for the installation of cover boards. Costs can vary based on the specifics of each installation.
Fixing Methods
  • Cover Boards: Should be fixed using 40mm Pins.
  • Replacement Fascias: Installed with 65mm Nails.
Regardless of size, Pins or Nails must always be A4 Marine Grade Stainless Steel. Using inferior quality fixings can lead to rust marks staining the surface of the fascia board, compromising the installation's integrity and appearance.
Conclusion
In summary, the choice between cover boards and replacement fascias ultimately depends on your specific needs, installation conditions, and budget. Consider the load-bearing requirements, design preferences, and overall cost when making your decision. Whether you opt for the more economical cover boards or the robust replacement fascias, both can provide a durable and attractive solution for your roofing project.
