Frequently Asked Questions About Soil & Waste Systems

Can Air Admittance Valves (AAV) be used with cesspools or septic tanks?
Yes, FloPlast air admittance valves can be used with both cesspools and septic tanks, but only if there is another venting pipe between the tank and the AAV, ideally closer to the tank. Without a vent pipe, gases could build up, potentially leading to dangerous conditions.
Can FloPlast Air Admittance Valves be installed below the flood level of appliances?
Yes, FloPlast AAVs can be installed below the flood level of appliances, but there are specific requirements:
  • 110mm AAVs should be installed at least 200mm above the highest wet entry point in the system.
  • 32mm, 40mm, and 50mm AAVs need to be 100mm higher than the waste pipe they are serving.
Can I fit my AAV to the outside of the building?
Yes, FloPlast manufactures an external Air Admittance Valve (AX110), which is designed for outdoor use, with frost and insect protection.
Can Polypropylene waste pipes be used externally?
Yes, but they must be painted to protect them from UV damage and ensure long-term durability.
Can PVC soil pipes be painted?
Yes, PVC soil pipes can be painted. You need to degrease the pipe first, then apply two coats of water-based gloss paint. The first coat can be thinned.
Can PVC-U waste pipes be used externally?
Yes, PVC-U waste pipes are designed for outdoor use and do not require painting.
Do any FloPlast Air Admittance Valves have a pressure rating of 10 psi (0.7 bar) for use with a Saniflo system?
No, FloPlast air admittance valves are not rated for use with Saniflo systems.
Do FloPlast Air Admittance Valves have to be installed vertically?
Yes, all FloPlast AAVs must be installed vertically, with no angle in the installation.
Do I need to install fire prevention collars when installing a pipe through a wall or floor?
Fire prevention collars are required when a pipe passes through a wall or floor that separates two properties, such as in apartment buildings. They help prevent the spread of fire.
Do I need to insulate my AAV?
No, FloPlast Air Admittance Valves are designed to operate in temperatures from -20°C to 60°C, so insulation is not necessary.
How do I stop the ‘gurgling’ effect when emptying my bath?
FloPlast manufactures specific Air Admittance Valves designed to prevent the gurgling effect caused by siphoning. Refer to the Air Admittance Valve section for more details.
How far will a 110mm soil pipe push into fittings?
If the pipe is chamfered, it will push 65mm into the fitting. If not chamfered, it will push 60mm.
How long should you leave solvent cement to dry?
After applying solvent cement, the joint will set within 1-2 minutes. It should be left to dry for:
  • 2-3 hours for short discharges
  • 24 hours for continuous discharge
What to do if connecting pipes at a non-standard angle?
FloPlast offers 0-90º adjustable bends in various sizes (32mm, 40mm, and 110mm) for both above-ground soil and underground drainage.
When should I use a 32mm, 40mm, or 50mm AAV?
  • 32mm pipes: Use an AAV if the pipe is longer than 1.5 meters.
  • 40mm pipes: Use an AAV if the pipe is longer than 3 meters.
  • 50mm pipes: Use an AAV if the pipe is longer than 4 meters. In shorter systems, you may increase the pipe size or add a mini air valve to prevent siphoning.
What ancillaries can be used with drinking water?
FloPlast offers the following ancillaries for potable water:
  • SL50 (50g lubricant gel)
  • SG100 (100g silicone grease)
  • SG800 (800g lubricant gel)
What are the operating parameters of FloPlast Air Admittance Valves?
FloPlast AAVs are tested in accordance with BS EN 12380 and have an operating range of -20°C to 60°C.
What bend should be used at the base of a 110mm soil pipe?
A long radius 87.5º rest bend or two 45º bends (with a minimum radius of 200mm) should be used at the base of a 110mm soil pipe.
What clipping distances should be used for 110mm soil pipes?
  • Vertical pipes: Anchor with a socket clip and place pipe clips at a maximum of 1.8 meters apart.
  • Horizontal runs: Anchor at sockets and use pipe clips at a maximum of 1 meter apart.
What fire ratings do fire collars have?
FloPlast fire collars are rated for 4 hours, which ensures they prevent the spread of fire through walls or floors.
What fittings do I need to connect a waste pipe to a soil pipe?
FloPlast offers a range of boss pipes and adaptors. For more details, check the section on bosses and adaptors.

What size waste pipe is needed for appliances?
  • 32mm pipe: For wash hand basins in the bathroom or cloakroom.
  • 40mm pipe: For all other appliances.
What temperature can water discharged through soil and waste pipes be?
FloPlast products are tested for water temperatures up to 93°C – 95°C (intermittent). For continuous discharge, water should not exceed 70°C – 75°C, and higher temperatures should be restricted to 2 minutes.
